On Tuesday night, Southampton faced Newcastle United in the first leg of the EFL Cup. Despite playing some good football in the first half, Newcastle were able to take the lead in the 53rd minute through Ayoze Perez. However, despite being down 1-0, Southampton managed to pull one back through Nathan Redmond in the 87th minute. The second leg will take place on January 24th at St James’ Park, and will be vital in determining who will progress to the semi-finals.

This match was closely fought, and it will be interesting to see how the two teams line up when they meet again on January 24th. With both teams having chances throughout the match, it was a fair result in the end. Newcastle will now prepare for their League Cup final against Manchester City while Southampton look to continue their good form in the Premier League.

It was a nervy start to the game as both teams battled for control of the midfield. However, it was Newcastle who took the lead just before the half-hour mark. A poor pass from Southampton’s defence was intercepted by Salomon Rondon and he passed to Ayoze Perez, who slotted the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.
